Dyson HS09 vs HS08: Which Airwrap Should You Choose?

Dyson’s Airwrap Co-anda2x HS09 and Airwrap i.d. HS08 share the same basic promise: drying and styling with controlled airflow rather than relying on extreme heat. They also both connect to the MyDyson app and can automate a personalised curl sequence. The important difference is that HS09 is not merely a new colour or attachment bundle. It introduces a more powerful motor platform, movement sensing and attachments that the machine can recognise.

That makes this a choice between the newest performance-focused Airwrap and the established connected model. Both ElectroPlanet listings compared here are the Ceramic Apricot/Topaz versions, so the decision can stay focused on function rather than finish.

HS09: the performance upgrade

The HS09 uses Dyson’s Hyperdymium 2 motor. Dyson describes it as its fastest and most powerful hair-care motor and states that it produces twice the air pressure of the previous Airwrap generation. Stronger Coanda airflow is intended to wrap hair more readily around the barrel, improve drying speed and provide the tension required for smoother, straighter finishes.

The new motor is only part of the upgrade. An accelerometer detects movement during curling and helps the machine recognise when hair has wrapped around the barrel. It can then run the personalised wrap, style and cold-shot stages without requiring the user to count each phase manually. HS08 already automates those stages; HS09 makes the interaction more responsive to how the tool is moving.

HS09 also introduces intelligent attachments. An RFID chip allows the machine to identify each compatible tool, load recommended heat and airflow settings, and remember customised preferences. The AirSmooth2x finishing attachment is a notable addition because it uses high-velocity air to create tension and smooth dry hair without hot plates.

HS08: connected styling without the newest hardware

The HS08 remains a genuinely intelligent styler. After the user creates a hair profile in the MyDyson app, its i.d. curl sequence calculates timings for wrapping, styling and setting each curl with a cold shot. Once configured, the sequence can be activated from the styler, reducing the need to judge every stage separately.

It still curls through the Coanda effect, supports drying, waving, smoothing, volumising and flyaway control, and includes negative-ion technology intended to reduce static. For someone whose priority is repeatable curls rather than the fastest possible drying or strongest airflow, HS08 covers the central Airwrap experience.

Compatibility is another consideration. Dyson states that Airwrap i.d. barrels work with its automated sequence and that its attachment generation maintains compatibility with earlier Airwrap devices. HS09 is a separate ecosystem: Dyson says only Co-anda2x attachments work with the newer machine. Anyone who already owns useful Airwrap attachments should therefore check compatibility before upgrading.

Which is easier to use?

Both models have an initial learning curve. Hair generally needs to begin damp for barrel styling, section size affects wrapping, and the best heat and airflow settings depend on hair type. The app can guide setup on either device.

HS08 is conceptually simpler: create a profile, select the appropriate attachment and use the stored curl routine. HS09 adds convenience once configured because attachments recall preferences and movement sensing helps trigger the sequence. However, buyers who do not plan to use the app or switch attachments frequently may receive less benefit from those intelligent features.

Pakistan-market checks before buying

Voltage deserves particular attention. Dyson manufactures its hair tools for the electrical market in which they are sold and advises against assuming that a travel adaptor makes a different-voltage unit safe. Before using either model in Pakistan, confirm the voltage printed on the exact machine and supplied plug, along with warranty coverage and authenticity. A plug-shape adaptor does not convert voltage.

Also verify the included styling set. Dyson offers Straight+Wavy and Curly+Coily packages in different countries, and their attachment selections can differ even when the machine and colour name are similar. The exact box contents matter more than promotional photos from another region.

Verdict: which Airwrap should you choose?

Choose the HS09 Co-anda2x if you style frequently, want Dyson’s strongest current Airwrap airflow, value faster drying and straighter finishing, or like attachments that automatically recall settings. It is the more advanced and performance-oriented machine.

Choose the HS08 Airwrap i.d. if app-personalised curling is the main attraction and you do not need HS09’s stronger motor, movement sensing or new attachment system. It remains the more established route to automated Airwrap curls and may suit an existing Airwrap household better.

Neither is universally superior for every routine. HS09 wins on hardware and automation depth; HS08 retains the essential connected styling experience. The sensible purchase depends on whether faster airflow and intelligent attachments will materially change how often—and how comfortably—you style.
